QES1

Preface

A unique thing about Vestige of the Phoenix is that we have a special kind of RP that is like a mini-game within the game. Well-aware of how some people can get bogged down with how Warcraft can sometimes get "boring," we have developed something that we call: Quests, Events and Storylines. Q.E.S are the collections of side-stories, events and overall stories that happen within Quel'Athillien that are geared toward progressing your character further. Sticking to the concept of: "what you put into RP is what you get out of it," we offer smaller, more personal storylines to help not only develop your character further, but allow them the chance to progress through the story even if the player's schedule doesn't allow them to show up to the main events all the time. Below we explain what each section is meant to do and to provide for the player. This form in particular is where one can find all of the information they need to determine which personal storyline they would prefer to take on to help progress their characters. Some mini-stories may take the form in encouraging a person to write a story for their character while others will be one-on-one RPs to keep the character up-to-date.

Quests

Quests in-game help a character to progress through a series of either linear stories or through random acts. In-game, these quests will always offer a reward of some kind whether it is gold, reputation or an item. No different from that, the quests that are offered to the guild not only can help a character progress through the current guild story but can also provide reputation, gold or an item. Quests can be anything from assisting an NPC from the current guild story or it could be something that is directed entirely toward helping a character progress as an individual. Example quests are: QES3

[Quest]: Help Farmer John.

[Information]: You must assist Farmer John in trying to discover why his crops are going missing. This will be a one-on-one RP with an NPC.

[Date]: September 20th

[Reward]: 10 Gold and +1 Reputation with the Commonfolk.

The quest itself explains what you are intending to do. The person who places up the quest determines what information is to be given to the quest-taker and when the quest will be had. This is to help people not only navigate what they can reasonably attend, but it also helps to know when they can expect the RP to happen if they sign up for it. Quests can fulfill any need that a character, story or NPC might have.

Can a quest be a one-on-one RP between two people who are already engaged in a story? No. Quests are meant to be something to provide for people who either cannot make main events, who want to increase reputation with a faction or group within Quel'Athillien or who want to progress their character. Two people already otherwise engaged in an RP just between them does not allow for other people to progress their characters. We encourage people to RP together about current events and stories, but quests are a flavor that is meant to subsidize what is happening.

Can a quest be for anything? Yes -- So long as it has a purpose to assist in progressing a character. If the quest is to obtain information, gather resources, assist NPCs or even discovering something of value, it is a quest that can be tied into helping grow a character. In this example, you are supposed to be finding out why Farmer John's crops go missing. What happens in the quest is purely at the discretion of the questgiver. In this instance, the questgiver (DM) could decide that Farmer John's crops are being stolen by a band of thugs who have been working for the nefarious Lord Skycaller. It may be up to the hero (the quest-taker) to fight back the thugs and retake the crops that were stolen. If the quest-taker is successful in their venture, they will be given 10 gold and given a boon of having an increased reputation to Commonfolk. This means that if they have to have a dialogue later with an NPC who is a common person, they will add that number to their charisma roll. This gives them a greater advantage when speaking to common people.

Do you have to give them gold if you put them in the rewards? Yes. You determine what you can give when you are the DM and if they succeed, you need to ensure they get the proper reward.

Can the DM change the date of the quest? Yes. If the DM and the quest-taker(s) decide on a date that works for the both of them, they can change the date as needed. The date is applied to help both DMs not feel that they have to rush and to help quest-takers understand that they have a limited time for certain quests.

What if the quest-taker does not succeed? If the quest-taker does not succeed, it is still a progression for their character. Like in-game, some quests will be failures; however, even if there is a failure to a quest, it is a growth for the character. Perhaps the character was not as smart or as strong as they supposed. A failure in a quest will not damage the overall character's base numbers, but it should be taken as a point of growth for the character. Perhaps they were not able to defeat the thugs and instead were heavily wounded. This can be used as RP to seek out a cleric to heal them and deal with the ego wound. Yes, the nefarious Lord Skycaller wins again, but there is a possibility of a quest coming around to get your revenge. For some quests, they can be repeated later on down the road, too. Repeatable quests are up to the DM.

Events

Events are structured, DM'ed gatherings that are either part of an overall story or are part of a side story. Events are meat to be structured events that host one or more people that are meant to progress not only the character but the overall story they are engaged with. There are two types of events: Events that are for specific groups and events that are for specific stories. Events for groups can be anything from liturgical services with the Holy Orthodox Church or training with the First Light military to classes with the Conclave. Events for groups are meant to add flavor to the groups and begin side stories for them. These stories can be on their own or coincide with the overall guild story. Generally the group events are at the discretion of the group's leaders. Events hosted for specific stories can be for side-stories within the guild - side-stories being anything that is an off-shoot of the main story - or they can be events that directly correlate with the overall guild story. For side-stories, it is often recommended that the DM contact Rennali, Amiyna or Larrendias to ensure that their side story won't interfere with the main story, though in truth, this happens very rarely. All guild story events will be posted by Rennali, Amiyna or Larrendias unless otherwise previously determined.

Here is an example of a group event:

[Event]: High Liturgy with the Holy Orthodox Church

[When]: Every Sunday @ 7 PM

[Where]: Tyr's Hand Cathedral (Proxy: Quel'Athillien Cathedral)

[Information]: This month's high liturgy will be focusing on Saint Bridenbrad with a sermon dedicated to focusing on how we can establish better connections to the Light.

[Contact]: Gavriel Branas

In this group event, it states specifically what the event is, including the group that is hosting it. It is always imperative that you put down who is hosting it so that those who are interested know. Adding the when and where is also paramount. Some events will happen in-game like the above example, whereas some events will happen in Roll20. Information on Roll20 events can be found in the [Information]: Roll20 and You! thread.  Letting the attendees know where it is going to happen helps them to decide how best to use their time and if they can make it. In this example, the liturgies are being held every Sunday. Some group events happen regularly, so it is good to note that. It is also imperative that if you are hosting a group event that you put it on the calendar.

Can groups use places in-game as proxies? Yes, you can! We understand that the WoW world is incredibly small for the sake of gameplay. This, however, doesn't mean that we are restricted to one place or another. If you find a place in Northrend that makes you think of Northwinter for your event, then by all means, feel free to say that you are using it as a proxy. Do be sure to inform your attendees when they show up, too. Sometimes we forget that we aren't in Kansas anymore.

Can anyone make a group event? Generally group events like this are at the discretion of the group leaders, but, often times if you work with them and ask nicely, they are good about letting people set up their own events for the group. Group events do not necessarily have to be restricted to the above example. Some groups have mini stories for themselves and have events that follow the stories they have. Events like those are help progression for characters who are involved with those groups and can also be applied to major guild events as well. QES4

Here is an example of a story event for a duchy:

[Event]: The Siege of Nothwinter (Part 1)

[When]: June 14th @ 8PM

[Where]: Roll20 (Link: http://roll20.net)

[Information]: In part one, we will be exploring the ruins of the decimated Bearpaw Lodge. Previously, we had freed Baroness Cornwell from the clutches of the nefarious Alexander Greypoole, and she has given us information about the potential for Greypoole's men to be forcing some of the local lodges under his influence.

[Contact]: Harpin Cornwell

Groups are not always restricted to the known groups within Quel'Athillien. Duchies also can have individual stories of their own that include the people who live there. Events are a way for groups of people to get creative and work through various scenarios and situations. If you have a group of people together and want to create a small story for yourselves that works through the guild system, it is ENCOURAGED that you give it a try and see what you can come up with. The ending of events should also be posted on the thread that they are put up on so that folks who did not get a chance to be there can have an opportunity to decide if that is something they would like to be part of in the future. Remember: we are all chroniclers of our collective story.

Do events give rewards? Events, unlike quests, do not always need to give a reward. If an event gives a reward of some kind, it is generally at the discretion of the DM. Guild events that include the overall story will generally give rewards that correlate with the story. Some rewards for events can be that all participants gain one point to be used in their modifiers as a way of thanking them for their attendance. Others can reward gold, reputation or the event can simply have been a fun progression for everyone involved.

Storylines

A storyline is something that has been discussed before but perhaps it is not defined very well. A storyline is a linear story that includes multiple people and/or groups. Stories on the overall are intended to progress not just groups but the entire guild as well. There are three kinds of storylines a character can interact with:

  1. Personal Storylines
  2. Group Storylines
  3. Guild Storylines

Personal Storylines are the linear stories that help to progress and flesh out a character. Personal stories can range from interaction the character has with other characters (platonic, romantic or adverse) on a one-on-one basis or interaction that the character has with groups and the guild. The main focus for most people is the progression of their characters and being able to enjoy the plotlines therein. As a guild, Vestige encourages characters to take all stories on a personal level by exploring their reactions and interactions with the people and things around them. Generally there are very few personal storyline events or quests that will be available outside of things like: weddings, birthdays and funerals. This is because each and every event is intended to be productive for every person. For individual stories, we encourage players to keep a character journal to document the things they say, see, taste and feel. This can also help the player to keep track of the things that happen to them and how their character interacted with the scenario.

Group storylines have been discussed briefly, but the definition might have been lost in them. Group stories can include specific groups within Quel'Athillien or whole duchies. Group stories are often some of the best collections of stories because they progress a group that the individual character has a vested interest in. Within a group story, the character has the opportunity to help the people around them as well as perhaps find something about themselves or their personal interactions with people. The stories among the groups are the smaller pieces to the overall puzzle of Quel'Athillien and are used often to enhance the overall story and flavor. Group stories are the middle ground between having a personal story and being involved in the overall story; adding to the overall story something that may have happened within a group or within a duchy.

Finally, guild storylines are, of course, the overall story that is meant to progress the guild. Guild stories are told in ways that move not just the individual but can affect entire groups and duchies, too. The main story is often told by Rennali, but it can also be told by Amiyna or Larrendias. The overall story thread will change and shift more dramatically than most other stories simply because of what is introduced on a much larger scale. Everyone is encouraged to participate in guild stories to help their character become invested in Quel'Athillien as a whole.

Conclusion

Vestige of the Phoenix - and by association First Light - want to provide the best we can for our members in terms of finding ways for them to interact with the guild in ways that not only provide for the individual but provide an overall experience for everyone. Quests, events and storylines are some of the ways that we encourage people to become creative and invest their time and character into the guild. There wasn't much professed on a person's individual story, but that is because we are confident that the individual person will always manage to find a friendly face willing to RP with them. As a whole, we want to be able to see that people can not only have fun with their friends but also reach out and show us what they can do as far as adding to the overall story. CREATIVITY IS ALWAYS ENCOURAGED HERE AT VESTIGE. If you have any questions on how you can contribute, feel free to ask any of our officers.

REMEMBER: IF YOU MAKE A QUEST OR AN EVENT, PLEASE BE SURE TO PUT THEM ON THE CALENDAR AS WELL AS ON THE FORUMS!
